AMERICAN FALLS - Alfred Henry Mayer (Al) passed away Saturday, December 3, 2011, at Spring Creek Manor in American Falls after a long illness.
Dad was born February 7, 1923, the third child of Henry and Johanna (Schweikert) Mayer in Pleasant Valley, Idaho. He completed his schooling in Pleasant Valley and then went to work for various farmers in the Aberdeen area. In 1944 he joined the Navy and spent the next two years in the Pacific.
On February 9, 1946 he married June Hoffmann in San Francisco, Calif.
He was honorably discharged in May 1946. Dad and Mom returned to Aberdeen, Idaho, to make their home and eventually buying a 160-acre farm north of Aberdeen, which was his pride. Mom passed away in 1995, and Dad was never able to recover from her loss.
He is survived by a son, Gary (Lynne) Mayer, Covington, Wash.; a daughter, Kathy (Dave) Burrup, Aberdeen, Idaho; a granddaughter, Korinda (Derek) Sprague, Tigard, Ore.; two step-grandsons, Les (Elvia) Jordan, Midland, Texas, and Chris (Jessica) Jordan, Tacoma, Wash.; one step-great-grandson, Corbin Jordan and another on the way. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his father, two mothers, three brothers, (Theophil, Ted, and Otto), two sisters (Theresa and Helena). He is also survived by three brothers (Emil, Bob and Art) and one sister, (Viola).
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, December 8, 2011, at Aberdeen Cemetery, Aberdeen, Idaho, with military honors by the American Legion Post 59.
The family would like to thank the Spring Creek Manor, especially Lianna, Terri, and Joyce for the care given Dad the past eight and a half years, and Alliance Hospice, especially Missy, Lisa, Eloise, Leticia, Peter, Danny, Larry and Stacey for the wonderful care and understanding the past 18 months.
The family requests no flowers but if you wish a donation in Dad's name may be made to the cancer or dementia foundations.
