Rachel was the mother of two girls who died young leaving her very distraught and depressed. Her depression and untreated mental illness lead to her early and untimely death at the age of only 31 years. Her first daughter Sedalia born in 1895 died at the age of two weeks. Her second daughter Sardia Pauline born in 1897 lived to the age of 2 years and died. They are buried next to Rachel.
During Rachel's illness, her younger sister Texas Owen, at about the age of 16, went and lived with Rachel and cared for her.
Rachel's grave did not have a headstone marker until 1941 when her mother Arletha Owen died and Rachel's brothers and sisters took what would have been Rachel's share of the inheritance and bought this granite marker for her grave.
