Ethelred Phillips "Thel" Horn III of Flint, MI, age 87, died Saturday, March 10, 2007, after a brief illnes. Thel was born at home in Bellevue, TN on February 21, 1920. He was a graduate of George H. Harding School, named for his grandfather and Wallace University School. He graduated in 1940 from Vanderbilt University Engineering School. He was president of the Senior Engineering class and a member of the Tau Beta Pi Honor Society. Thel enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1938, where he became the youngest Major in the ground forces during World War II. He participated in the landing at Saipan, Iow Jima, and Tinian. Thel was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of the Confederate Veterans, and the Kentucky Colonels. He was an active member of the Auburn, Cord, Dusenburg Association. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a faithful officer in the Christian Science Church. Thel owned Horn Homes, Inc. and developed Belle Meade Subdivision and co-developed several sites including, Manford Heights as well as homes in California. Thel was preceded in death by his parents, Ethelred Phillips Horn, Jr. and Virginia Harding Horn, wives; Phyllis J. Horn and JoAnn Horn; and grandson Scott Alan Hoffman. Thel is survived by 3 daughters, Pam Hoffman, Stephanie (Reid) Wiecks, and Heather (Frank) Peirson; 4 stepchildren; 7 grandchildren, Eric (Michelle) Hoffman, Nick Hoffman, Damon Hoffman, Melani Hoffman, Danielle (Bill) Remencus, Justin Hoffman, and Darcy Wiecks; great grandchildren, Amanda and Sarah Hoffman and Abigail and Joshua Remencus; several neices and nephews; and brother, Francis Marable Horn of Nashville, TN.
