Laura is a daughter of William Henry Hatch and Martha Ann Hancock, the eighth of twelve children. After growing up in Sevier County, Utah, the family moved to Riverside, Idaho. It was there that Laura married Ephraim Berry Ball on January 21, 1903. She was almost seventeen. In the next seventeen years she and Ephraim became parents to eight children: Chancey Berry, Laura May, Gladys Irene, Elmer H., Cecil Edward, LaVerl Willard, Alton Clifford, and Martha Amy.

Then Laura died of broncho pneumonia leaving seven children behind.
