Myrtle C. Hammer, 104, Velva, died Saturday, November 15, 2008 in the Souris Valley Care Center, Velva.

Myrtle was born on December 17, 1903, a daughter of Les and Clara (Hoff) Alspach in Devils Lake, ND. The family moved to Ray, ND where Myrtle attended grade school and graduated from Ray High School. She furthered her education, attending Minot State Teachers College for two summers.

In April of 1938, she was united in marriage to Edward Hammer in Velva, ND. They made their home on the farm in Velva, where Myrtle raised their children.

Myrtle was a member of the Oak Valley Lutheran Church, as well as the ladies circle, a charter member of the Star Senior Citizens, a member of the Rebekah lodge, American Legion Auxiliary all of Velva. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, playing bridge, and was a self taught mandolin player. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother and will be missed by all that knew her.

Those who shared in her life: Children Larry (Mary Ann) Hammer, Hutchison, MN, Connie (Albert) Lindahl, Sawyer, ND, Ella Bursau, Velva, Helga Haga, Voltaire, ND daughters-in-law: Pennie Hammer, Ellensburg, WA and Marcile Combs, Mesa, AZ; brother Ernest Alspach, New Zealand, sister Donna Pearson, CA, 19 grandchildren 42 great grandchildren 4 great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sons Gene, Gordon, Norman, daughter Olga, three great-grandchildren Rachael, Rebeka and Jacob, sons-in-law Ernest Haga, Albert Bursau, Bob Cummings, daughter-in-law Vivian Hammer, eight brothers and sisters.

Visitation: Monday, November 17, 2008 from 3-6 at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva

Funeral Service: Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 11 am at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva

Burial: 2 pm at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot

Officiants: Rev. Tim Johnson and Rev. Rollin Rogness
