The son of Judge Joseph W. and Amanda (Couch) Jennings, Charles was a cousin of William Jennings Bryan. He married first 5 May 1880, Marion County , Illinois, Daisey Martin. They were the parents of two children: Hazel D. Jennings McBride and an infant son.

Charles married second 10 Jun 1902, Marion County, Illinois Maud Cunningham.
