Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as a Captain in the 38th Illinous Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 62nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 6, 1865 in recognition of his wartime services. After the war he served as United States Consul in Kingston, Ontario, Canada from 1874 to 1878.
