Funeral services for George Nead Phillips, age 71, of Watertown, SD, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2011, at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown. Rev. Sam Hatlestad will officiate. Music will be provided by A.J. Sherrill as organist with Robbyn Givens and Greg Dubois as vocalists. The eulogy will be presented by Myron Rau, Executive Director of the SDTA. George passed away following a lengthy battle with cancer on Saturday, December 3, 2011, at Jenkins Living Center in Watertown.
Burial will take place on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Garretson, SD. Honorary pallbearers will be: Terry Nelson, Glenn Heibult, Elwood Halverson, Mike Donovan, Larry Eichens, Darrel Smit, Gerald Hagen and Dave Satter. Active pallbearers will be George's siblings and grandsons: Gerald Phillips, Gene Phillips, Glenn Phillips, Gary Phillips, Gail Phillips Madler, Patrick Phillips, Kevin Phillips, Raymond Phillips and Jared Petersen.
Visitation will be at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Wednesday. The family is requested to meet at the church on Wednesday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service.
George was born on February 29, 1940, at Valley Springs, SD, to Vernus and Edna (Schurman) Phillips. He was the oldest of six siblings. He received his education in the Garretson schools; enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves and spent his active duty at Ft. Leonardwood, MO. George returned to Sioux Falls, SD, where he launched a lifelong career as a professional trucker.
In 1961 George married Rosalie Sundet in Sioux Falls, SD. To this union, two children were born, Scott James and Sharon Marie. George was employed by Hassenstein Steel in the early 1960's and then by Egger Steel, where he transported steel bridge beams for the interstate highway system project in South Dakota and surrounding states. In the early 1970's, George was employed by Farmland Industries.
On May 9, 1992, George married Vivian (Gilderhus) Coffey in Oberon, ND. The couple moved to Watertown where Vivian still resides. George continued to work for Farmland Industries until his failing health forced him to retire in 2000. He drove a tanker for them for 27 years. In his almost 50 years of professional trucking, he logged nearly three million miles without any kind of accident or speeding violation.
George received many honors and awards for his professional safe driving record. He was a team captain of America's Road Team, an elite group of drivers who represent the industry throughout the country promoting safety, courtesy and professionalism in trucking. This group is sponsored by the American Trucking Association (ATA). Each year the ATA chooses only 12 professional truck drivers to become members of the ATA Road Team. George traveled with the Road Team in 1996. In 1994, George received the SD Trucking Association Driver of the Year award. He competed for the SD State Truck Driving Championships every year and he earned first place seven times in his class, each time going to the national competition.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer and a former member of the American Legion.
George is survived by his wife, Vivian, of Watertown; one son, Scott (Karen) Phillips, of Colton, SD; four grandchildren: Patrick, Kevin and Raymond Phillips of Colton, SD, and Jared Petersen of Omaha, NE; four brothers: Gerald (LeAnne) Phillips of Larchwood, IA, Gene (Margie) Phillips of Madison, SD, Glenn (Cheri) Phillips of Crystal City, MO, Gary (Glennette) Phillips of Hyde Park, UT; one sister, Gail(Barney) Madler, of Rapid City, SD; an aunt and uncle and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
