He was the fourth son of Tandy H and Mary "Polly" (Clarkston) Welch. He married Clarkie Schofield on April 29, 1843, in Claiborne County, Tennessee. They were the parents of Azariah, Mary Ann "Polly," Nancy Minerva, Elizabeth, Henry E., James J., Elliot B., John D., Perry W., Laura, and Cornelius Welch. He is listed on the 1850 Federal Census in Subdivision 33, Hancock County; on the 1860 census in Murrel, Hancock County; and on the 1870 census in District 11, Grainger County. The place of his burial is unknown, but it is mostly likely in an unmarked grave in either Grainger County or Claiborne County, Tennessee.
