Joseph, son of Joseph (21), born 1769; blacksmith and nail manufacturer; had a rolling mill in Walpole, New Hampshire and later in Troy,  New York; lived later in Philadelphia and St. Louis; was a man of great physical power; this story is told of him; while riding in a stage somewhere out West, two strangers who were Southerners, his fellow travelers, fell to telling stories of great feats in lifting; one of them had been to Deerfield, Mass., and had seen a friend of Deerfield, arms lift a cannon weighing 1100 lbs., and gave the particulars of the affair; the friend doubted, when Barnard put in his word; "You may believe it," said he, "for I am the man that did it;" died about 1847.  He married Feb. 3, 1793, Tirzah, daughter of Col. Joseph Stebbins; she died at St. Louis, 1840 (?).
