Dale was born on Dec. 22, 1928, in Springville, Iowa, the son of Fred and Catherine "Zerbe" Northrup. He attended schools in Cedar Rapids and Troy Mills, Iowa. Following school, he entered the Army from 1946 until 1947 when he was honorably discharged from stateside service.
On Feb. 14, 1949, he was united in marriage to Anna Shunkwiler in Cedar Rapids. To this union was born five children. They moved to Mason City in 1969 where they have made their permanent home.
Dale worked for Allied Mills in maintenance for 22 years and retired in 1990.
He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved playing practical jokes on family and friends. The more outrageous the joke, the better. He enjoyed singing while playing the guitar and liked to yodel. He also was on several bowling teams over the years and liked beating his opponents in cribbage. Dale also enjoyed woodworking and carving, fishing area rivers and his trips to Minnesota near Brainerd.
As a young man, he attended the Methodist Church.
Those thankful for sharing Dale's life include his wife of 54 years, Anna; one daughter, DaleAnn and her husband, Russell Dusheck, of Mason City; three sons: Mark North-rup, of Mason City, Jeffrey and his wife, Lori Northrup, of Vancouver, Wash., and Terry Northrup, of Cedar Falls; his daughter-in-law, Sandy, the wife of the late Brian Northrup, of Mason City; twelve grandchildren; eight great-grandsons; two sisters, Violet and her husband, Karl Massey, of Lisbon, and Mae Corstien, of Cedar Rapids; one brother, Paul Northrup, of Marion; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
