After a great life of 90 years, Bernie passed away. Born in South Dos Palos in 1918, Annibale Joseph was the son of Giovanni and Lydia Bernardi.

He attended Dos Palos High School where he excelled in sports. Moving to Merced, he met the love of his life, Louise Pellissier.

After serving in the U.S. Air Force during WWII, he began his long career in the liquor business. "Bernie's Liquors and Delicatessen" quickly became popular. Bernie eventually opened additional locations, a catering business, a wholesale liquor department, a restaurant, and a wine shop.

He served as a director of the Merced County Fair Board, president of the Merced Golf and Country Club, and a member of the Mercy Hospital Foundation. He loved the San Francisco Giants and playing golf with his wife and friends. Spending time on Lake McClure and with his family in Aptos were some of his greatest pleasures as well as cooking delicious meals for family and friends. Bernie enjoyed sitting on his patio, watching the golfers play the 9th hole, while savoring a glass of red wine, and an occasional cigar.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Rita Lorenzi; sister, Mary Wickham; and son-in-law, Michael Rahilly, Jr.
He is survived by Louise Bernardi, his devoted wife; daughter, Nanette Rahilly and granddaughter Ashley; daughter and son-in-law, Chris and Ken Talley; grandson, Rob Massey and his wife Mary; daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and Kimble Phillips, and granddaughters Gianna and Annalise. He is also survived by his sister, Anna Mae Hodges.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 671 E. Yosemite Ave. in Merced on Friday, March 20, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. Remembrances may be made to Mercy Hospital Foundation, 2740 M Street, Merced, Ca. 95340; or Hinds Hospice Foundation, 410 W. Main St, Suite A, Merced, Ca. 95341.
