Joseph R. "Joe" Bonebrake, 71, died unexpectedly at 10:04 AM Friday, April 21, 1989, at his West Lafayette home. He was born in Cutler, July 3, 1917, graduated from Cutler High School, and received his degree in civil engineering at Purdue University in 1939. On April 5, 1941, he was married in Knoxville, TN, to Betsy D. Deyton, who survives.

Mr. Bonebrake formerly lived in Davenport, IA, Brussels, Belgium, Waukegan, IL, State College, PA, and Guam. He came to West Lafayette in 1965. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers for 26 years, retiring as lieutenant colonel in 1965. He served during World War II and the Korean War. From 1965 until 1983, he was associated with Purdue University as an engineer with the physical plant. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Society of Professional Engineers, and American Legion Post 11. He was active in the Purdue Bowling League and was an avid bridge player.

Surviving with his wife are three sons, Joseph W. Bonebrake of Norfolk, VA, Jerry L. Bonebrake of Almeda, CA, and Larry S. Bonebrake of Champaign, IL; a daughter, Patricia A. Grams of Lafayette; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother. Service April 25 at Hippensteel Chapel; entombment Tippecanoe Memory Gardens Mausoleum with military service by a Fort Benjamin Harrison detachment.
