He was born on March 5, 1915, to David and Hilma (Halverson) Bonkrud in Pinkham, Saskatchewan, Canada. The family later settled in the Dallas area where he was raised and attended school. On June 5, 1936, he married Sarah Johnson in Milwaukee. They farmed in the Dallas area for a time, and Vernon later went to work for REC in Barron where he retired as a Line Foreman after 33 years. He had been a long-time member of Faith Lutheran Church in Cameron and had served on the church council. He has been a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 57 years and has served on the Cameron School Board. Vernon enjoyed hunting, gardening, traveling and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Bonkrud of Cameron; daughters, Lois (Bill) Shearrow of Frederic, Janet (Ken) Dummer of Bellingham, Wash., and Sandra (Will) Arnold of Crooksville, Mo.; grandchildren, Tim (Nancy) and Kevin (Amy) Shearrow, Maribeth (Ross) Cooper, Dwight (Shari) and Mark Dummer, Chad and Cassie Arnold; great-grandchildren, Jenna, Matthew, Andrew and Jay Shearrow, Christian Cooper, Nick and Brett Dummer; brother, Lyle (Doris) Bonkrud of Cameron; sisters, Ovida Hanson of Chetek and Agnes (Ernest) Gilberts of Milwaukee; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Perrance, Orrin, Harold and Herbert Bonkrud; and sister, Helen Bonkrud.Funeral services were held on Sunday, Nov. 16, at Faith Lutheran Church in Cameron.
