He served with the Cadet corps of the Virginia Military Institute at the battle of New Market in 1864.
After the war, he returned to Richmond, Virginia, and became a member of George W. Anderson and Sons.
Anderson served in the Virginia Volunteers from 1871 to 1893, reaching the rank of brigadier-general.
He was adjutant-general of Virginia from 1885 to 1890 and from 1906 to 1910.
Served on the Richmond city council in 1902, in the House of Delegates in 1903-1904, and in the state Senate in 1906.
He was vice president of the Richmond Trust Company.
