Walter E. Swingle, age 91, passed away at home on Nov. 26, 2011 at 4 p.m. in Globe, Ariz. with family at his bedside.

Walt was born in Dudleyville, Ariz. on Oct. 25, 1920, the son of Clara and William Walter Swingle.

Walt was a mine supervisor at the Ray Open Pit. He started out at a cabinet shop in San Diego, Calif. He then worked for Consolidated Aircraft plant after a hitch in the service. He then worked for the U.S. Indian Service at Parker, Ariz., Isbell Construction at Ray, Ariz., Kennecott, and finally ASARCO. He retired in 1982.

Walt served in the U.S. Navy, mostly aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga in the gunnery department from 1943 to 1946. His ship also transported military personnel from Pearl Harbor to San Francisco, when the war was over.

Walt was always busy. He loved fishing and hunting. He also reloaded bullets. He was a very skilled work-worker and made so many kinds of interesting items out of various sorts of wood.

His daughter Jean remembers, "The greatest Dad ever...always there for me. I think they broke the mold after he was made."

Son Lee remembers his father as, "The best Dad anyone could ask for, and the best person anyone could ever know."

A real family man, the grandchildren fondly remember Walt as "one of the greatest grandpas ever."

His live-in-love Hope Barnett said "He was my love."

He is survived by his son, Lee (Jody) Swingle of Dudleyville; daughter, Jean Swingle of Kearny; brother, Phil Swingle of Oxnard, Calif.; live-in love, Hope Barnett, and her two sons, Jerry and Pete Acton, and daughter, Lynell Corbett (who are Walt's nephews and niece). Also surviving are devoted grandchildren, Kathy, Leigh Ann, Wanda, Michele, Richie and Pam; and great-grandchildren, Taylor, Ahren, Samantha, Xada, Shelby, Chris, Dustin, Christopher, Joshua, and Ramon.

He is pre-deceased by his parents, one sister, six brothers, Lee and Jean's mother, Irene, and second wife, Juanita Harmon.

Services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Griffith's Mortuary Chapel in Kearny.
