The 8th of 10 children, Bertha finished high school in one-room, mountain schools in Washington Co., VA. She had vision and dental problems from an early age. She stood about 4'11" and weighed less than 115 pounds for most of her life.

She lived Washington Co., VA with brief sojourns to Kingsport and Bristol, TN until 1920.

She met Clarence Columbus Martin (AKA James Monroe Holloway) while working as a clerk in a general store. They married 3 Apr 1921 and had three children together.

Lived: Mendota VA off & on 1921 until 1935; Johnson City, TN 1921; Little Rock, Ark 1923-1928; Roland, Ark 1928-29; Little Rock 1929-30; Dover, Ark 1930-1934; Washington, D.C. 1935-1952 (various addresses); 715 S Taylor St., Arlington, VA 1952-1958; 3500 Tyler St., Baileys Crossroads, VA until 1988.

After 1935, Bertha worked in Washington D.C. as a file clerk until retirement.

Bertha loved plants and gardening, crocheting lace tablecloths and other household items, crossword puzzles and Scrabble. She played Rook, drank hot brewed coffee (with extra instant coffee added) straight from the pot into her mouth, listened to country music radio from Wheeling, WV late at night and early morning.

Altogether, Bertha was a lovely, gentle person who cared deeply for her family.
