Moyle Q. Rice died Feb. 16, 2001. He was born Nov. 27,1911, in Bountiful, Utah, to Quince and Myra Winegar Rice.
He spent his early childhood in Farmington, Utah, attending grade schools there and in Superior, Wyo. In 1927, his family moved to Clifton, Idaho, where he finished high school, then came to Utah Agricultural College (USU) in 1932. He received his B.S. Degree in 1936, followed by an M.A. at the University of Nebraska in 1937. Later, he studied at the University of Chicago and Harvard.
In 1937 he became a member of the English Department at Utah State, where he taught literature and writing with great enthusiasm for 45 years. He was honored a number of times by the university as Professor of the Year. During his lifetime he authored a number of books, articles and short stories. Many of his students still kept in touch with him and remembered the influence he had on their lives.
In 1937, he married Elizabeth Sant of Clifton, Idaho. They had two children, Louise and Harvey, and were later divorced. In 1968, he married Ruth Johnson Randall, mother of three daughters.
He is survived by his wife and their children, Louise (Mrs. Preston) Thomas, Logan, Christine (Mrs. Julio) Acevedo, New York City, Mrs. Jan Logan, Salt Lake City, and Becky (Mrs. Dolph) Woods, Farr West, Utah. One son, Harvey F. Rice, Coos Bay, Ore., preceded him in death. Moyle and Ruth have a total of seven grandchildren: Diana Thomas Duncan, Beaverton, Ore.; Jonathan Thomas, Logan; Michael Corey Logan; Andrea Acevedo, Boston, Mass.; Rachel Woods, Salt Lake City, and Jennifer Woods, Salt Lake City. Moyle and Ruth also have two great-grandchildren: Michael and Madeline, children of Diana, in Beaverton, Ore., a granddaughter, Jory Acevedo, preceded him in death. Moyle is survived by one brother, Ted, of Clifton, Idaho; two sisters, Lamar Bingham ("Sis"), Salt Lake City, and Jane Woods Comia, St. George and Clifton. Two brothers preceded him in death, Leonard William, Monmouth, Ore., and Lawrence Harvey, Pocatello, Idaho.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Allen-Hall Mortuary. At Moyle's request, only graveside services for the family will be held in the Logan cemetery under the direction of Allen Hall Mortuary.
