He was born in Madison County, Kentucky to parents, Major Hugh Johnson and Elizabeth Beasley. To this union were born 8 children: William b. 1811, Susan Jane b. 1813, Nancy b. 1816, Schuyler C b. 1817, Alfred b. 1819, John S b. 1823, Daniel Coleman b. 1826, and Reuben b. 1829. He later met and married Lucinda Walkup on Jan 13, 1853 Madison County, Kentucky. They moved to Missouri around 1858 where they settled. They had 10 children: William b. 1854, Josephine b. 1856, Mary b. 1858, Nancy Savannah b. 1860, George b. 1862, Martha b. 1864, Patsy b. 1866, Andrew b. 1867-1872, James Harvey b. 1870 (my great grandfather), Robert b. 1873. While in Missouri he was drafted into the military during the Civil War from 1863-1865. He was 36 at the time. He is buried at the oldest cemetery in Atchison County beside his wife, Lucinda, and son, Andrew.
