U.S. Congressman. Born in South Salem, Ohio, he attended Greenfield Academy, pursued the vocation of civil engineer and was in charge of the construction of the Marietta & Cincinnati Railroad in Vinton County, Ohio, until he resigned in 1855. He then studied law, graduated from the Cincinnati Law School in 1859, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in Greenfield, Ohio. He was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives in 1861 and served in the Ohio State Senate, (1868-69). In 1877, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1881. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court of the United States and was president of the Commercial Bank of Greenfield, until his death at age 77 in Greenfield, Ohio.
