Deseret News, The (Salt Lake City, UT) - April 14, 2009 - Dorothy Cornish Bintz "Dottie" Our beloved mother and dear friend died from the ravages of Alzheimers disease on April 11, 2009, in a local care facility surrounded by her family.

Dorothy Vernam Cornish was born on December 6, 1925, in Trenton, New Jersey to Clement H. and Hazel V. Cornish. Dottie traveled through the Panama Canal at age 2 months, on her way to China where her father was a diplomat for the U.S. State Department. Upon their return to the United States, they resettled in Trenton. Dottie was educated in the New Jersey school system and graduated from Trenton High School in 1943. She was a member of the National Honor Society.

Dottie attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York where she met her future husband, Charles Thomas (Tom) Bintz from Salt Lake City. They were married in 1945. After Tom's discharge from the Navy and his graduation, they made their home in Salt Lake City. Dottie was an accomplished athlete, teaching and winning diving championships, one of which was the Mid Atlantic Diving Championship in 1943. Dottie also was the winner of Salt Lake Tribune No Champs Championship in the Age 45 group. Always interested in helping others, she was an active member of various organizations such as the Community Chest (United Way), Mental Health Association, Salt Lake Junior League, Assistance League, was the head of the Westminster College Foundation, and was honored to be named to the Westminster Board of Trustees. One of her greatest contributions was "Baby Love" an educational comic book created in partnership with the LuAnn cartoonist Greg Evans. "Baby Love" was designed to teach the basics of infant care to young and uneducated mothers.

She had a lovely voice and sang with the Junior League Choraleers, The Utah Symphony Chorus under Maurice Abravenel, The Oratorio Society and the Jay Welch choral. She was a long-time member of the Salt Lake Town Club, Cottonwood Club, Salt Lake Swimming and Tennis Club, African Violet Society, Holladay Community Church, First Congregational Church and PTA president at Oakwood Elementary School for several years.

Dottie received national designation as a Certified Personal Counselor (CPC), one of three such positions in Utah while working at All Seasons Employment. When the children were older, Dottie decided to finish her education and completed her degree in Behavioral Science with a 4.0 GPA at Westminster College. She always said her greatest accomplishment was that she and Tom "raised four fine children."

Dottie is survived by her husband of 65 years and her children, Dorothy Richardson (DeeDee) (Pokey/Robert), Martha Neerings, Charles (Charlie) (Diane), Brian (Sheri), grandchildren John Bordley, Corey Neerings, and Christopher Bintz, her great-grand-children and DeeDee and Brian's stepchildren, Kresta Falk, Tyler Richardson, Joshua Anderson, Nichole Anderson, Ryan Haws.

The family would like to extend its gratitude for the excellent care Dottie received in this difficult time from the staff at Sunrise Senior Center and Sylvia Brunisholz of Care Giver Services.

Friends may visit with the family at Neil O'Donnell Mortuary 372 East 100 South from 5-7 p.m. on April 15, 2009. A private family graveside service will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to the Alzheimer's Association Utah Chapter, 855 East 4800 South Suite 100 Murray, Utah 84107.
