Grand Island (Nebraska) Daily Independent Wednesday, March 16, 1898

About eleven o'clock a Mr. Scheibel, a Russian living in the Third ward was stricken with paralysis. He was sitting in a chair at the time. Other members of the family were busy with work about the house and suddenly he failed to answer some of the remarks addressed to him. This was deemed rather peculiar and a member of the family approached closer and again addressed him and took hold of him to shake him. He then fell over. Dr. Roeder was summoned and saw at once that he had been stricken with paralysis. The doctor believes the patient will recover though there was great alarm for a time and all the members of the family were called together. The gentleman is a well meaning honest old Russian, over sixty years of age and very highly spoken of by his neighbors.
Note: He didn't recover. He died the next day.

Followup: Monday, March 21, 1898
The funeral of Mr. John P. Scheibel was held at the German Lutheran church on east second street yesterday afternoon, the pastor, Rev. Matushka delivering an impressive discourse. The funeral was quite largely attended.
