A native of north Dallas, Harold Coit graduated from Baylor University in 1951. Served in the United States Navy during the Korean War as Lieut JG on the destroyer Lyman K. Swenson, seeing action with the Chinese off the Korean coast. At the close of the war, he returned to Texas and settled in Austin where he attended law school at the University of Texas. He remained in Austin and practiced law until his death.

He was the father of two daughters, Cheyney and Wendy.
