Simon Peter Beckstead was born Jan 1822 in Ontario, Canada. With his parents and many other family members,he immigrated to the U.S. to become members of the church of the Latter Day Saints. Simon and his family arrived in Missouri during the Morman War. They left for Nauvoo, Illinois and Simon was baptized in the Mississippi River by Joseph Smith.

Simon married Mary Elizabeth Calkins on 30 Aug 1856 in Hancock, Illinois. Her family were also Latter Day Saints. On their way to Salt Lake City, they stopped at Winter Quarters in Council Bluffs. Simon and Mary decided to stay instead of going on to Salt Lake City. Both Simon and Mary had brothers and uncles who served with the Morman Brigade.

Simon and Mary homesteaded in Fremont County, Iowa. They had 10 children and Mary died in 1864 soon after the birth of their 10th child. Simon married Mary Ellen Beaston Woodside in 1864. Mary Ellen died in 1865.

Simon married Sarah Ann Birkby Norman in 1865 and they later divorced. In 1885 Simon married Celestia Hamilton Manley.

Simon was the 1st President of the reorganized Latter Day Saints in Hamburg. He died in 1910 at the age of 88 years.
