Richard, who went to sea in 1822 in the civil servant position of Captain's Clerk on the USS Oswego, died at sea off the coast of Liberia the following year. He was 23 years old at the time of his death.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters Anna Maria and Rebecca. He was survived by his siblings William and Catherine. William Seton, then serving as a Naval Lieutenant, rose to the rank of Captain before his death 45 years later. Catherine, a Sister of Mercy, died in 1891 at the age of 90.
