Jacob Ray Abernathy, age 76, of Catawba passed away Monday, November 21, 2011 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. Born December 12, 1934 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Willie Carlton and Alice Brown Abernathy. He was a member of Catawba United Methodist Church, retired from Mom and Pop's in Claremont, retired after 29 years of service as a Volunteer Fireman, was a member of the Catawba Rescue Squad and served on the Town council of Catawba from 1999-2007. Mr. Abernathy was a member of Riverside Masonic Lodge 606, was a Charlotte Body Scottish Rites KCCH, a member of Oasis Temple and York Rite Bodies. He was a certified lecturer and served as a District Deputy Grand Lecturer, District Deputy Grand Master of the 53rd Masonic District, member of Catawba Chapter 124 and served as District Deputy Grand Patron in the O.E.S.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Paul Abernathy, Leroy "Bud" Abernathy and Grady Abernathy.

He is survived by: Wife: Cleo Laney Abernathy of the home

Son: Ray Abernathy and wife Sandy of Catawba

Grandson: Jake Abernathy, III of Catawba

2 Sisters: Mae Mundy of Catawba Polly Woodring of Chester, VA

The funeral service will be held on Friday, November 25, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Catawba United Methodist Church with Rev. Rich Tuttle officiating.

Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory with Masonic graveside rites.

The family will receive friends Friday from 10:00a.m. - 12:45p.m., at the church, prior to the service.
