STEVENSVILLE - Joyce J. Bucher, 71, of Stevensville, passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2007, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.

A service celebrating her life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 7, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, corner of Colfax and Kline, Benton Harbor, with Pastors Martin Weigand and Richard Hennig officiating. A private burial will take place in Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph. Friends may visit with the family from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home in St. Joseph. Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church or donor's choice.

Joyce was born on September 8, 1935, in Benton Harbor, to Verne and Grace (Lemon) Bucher. She graduated from Benton Harbor High School and the Michigan Judicial Institute. She worked for the Benton Harbor Police Department and later became a Magistrate with Berrien County, a position she held for 28 years before retiring. She was one of the first women in Michigan to hold such a position during which she officiated for more than 4,000 marriages. She also volunteered with the Michigan State Police Post in Bridgman and Crime Stoppers. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Benton Harbor. She will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her sister, Ada (William) Skoda of Benton Harbor; three nephews, Michael Skoda of Berrien Springs, Warren (Joan) Skoda of St. Joseph, and David (Tracey) Skoda of Baroda; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Verne and Grace Bucher, and a nephew, John Skoda.
