He was the youngest child of John Whitney and Laura Elizabeth (Canfield) Slocum.
He married Carrie Etta Adams on Dec. 25, 1891, in Minden, Kearney, Nebraska. They were the parents of Emily Victoria, Clarence Jay, Elmer Robert "Red," and Edith Agnes Slocum.

Obituary - John S. Slocum
John S. Slocum was born in Morrison, Ill., May 20, 1864. His parents moved to Boone, Iowa, when he was a small child, where he remained until a young man, when he went to Nebraska where he married Miss Carrie E. Adams at Minden, Neb., Dec. 25, 1891. Four children were born to this union:
Emily V. Polk who resides at Tulsa, Okla.: Clarence J. Slocum of Woodward, Okla.: Elmer R. Slocum of Oklahoma City, Okla.: and Edith A. Slocum who resides here with her mother.
Mr. Slocum's health has been failing ever since he had the flu three years ago, and he passed away Jan. 2, 1923. The funeral was held Jan. 4, 1923, at the Sleeper & Ralston Chapel and burial was made in Highland Cemetery.
