Owen Johnson, age 84, of Huron, died Monday, November 21, 2011, at his home. His funeral service was at 2:30 PM Saturday, November 26th at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Donald Crippen officiating. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Huron Veterans Council.

Owen Sheldon Johnson was born May 7, 1927, to John Lewis and Edna (Jensen) Johnson on his parents' farm northeast of Iroquois, South Dakota. Owen attended grade school through eighth grade, then as the oldest member of the family, he took responsibility to help his parents at their family farm.

In May 1951, Owen was drafted in the US Army and was stationed in Korea as a Medical Aidman. He was honorably discharged in April 1953. He returned to Iroquois, and due to his father's illness, helped on the farm.

He was united in marriage to Jeanette Tschetter May 30, 1954, and was blessed with five children. They were married 57 years.

Owen was employed at Westerberg Hardware, Schweitzer Oil Company, Tschetter's Station and Grocery in Iroquois, Kingsbury ASCS and was self-employed in the excavating and plumbing business. In 1962 he started working for Northwestern Public Service and retired in 1988 after 26 ½ years.

Owen was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, RSVP, and the Huron Radio Club. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church and was a frequent volunteer.

Owen had many interests including amateur radio operator, wood working, crafts, fishing, camping, music, and jam sessions with family and friends. He had a passion for any type of planes and trains along with reading, especially history and non-fiction. He enjoyed going to Godfather's Pizza and The Plains with family and friends.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Jeanette of Huron; one son, Bill (Dawn) Johnson of Huron; four daughters, Anita Petersen (fiancé, Jim Pekron) of De Smet, Kathy (Frank) Buckley of Springfield, Virginia, Carol (Dennis) Buckland of Mitchell, and Susan Nicodemus of Covington, Louisiana; twelve grandchildren, Andrew (Jennifer McIntyre) Walz, Erica (Josh) Gibson, Daniel Buckley, Sarah Buckley, Corey Buckland, Shanan Buckland, Elizabeth Johnson, Emily (Aaron) Bateman, Logan Johnson, Kyle (Molly Berggren, fiancé) Morgan, Benjamin Morgan, and Olivia Nicodemus; five great grandchildren, Carissa and Noah Gibson, Anthony Haak, Ian Bateman, and step-great grandson, Dhamon Bateman; his brothers and sisters, Bob (Lorna) Johnson of Watertown, Bonnie (Craig) Munger of De Smet, Roger (Kathy) Johnson of Sturgis, South Dakota, Shirley Schaefer of Sauk Centre, Minnesota, Don (Cathie) Johnson of Lubbock, Texas and Russell (Elaine) Johnson of Huron.

Owen was preceded in death by parents John Lewis and Edna Johnson.
