William Hector Dies After Driverless Truck Passes Over Body

William Hector, 67, was fatally injured Saturday on the ranch of his son, Ben Hector, near Eureka, when an auto truck, belonging to J.R. Blacklaw, Eureka, passed over his leg and body. He died within an hour after being brought to a hospital here.

The truck had been left by Mr. Blacklaw with the brakes set, but they failed to hold and the driverless machine overtook Mr. Hector and crushed him before anyone noticed that the machine was moving. Mr. Hector was following a large combined harvester which was being moved across the Ben Hector land, by men employed by Mr. Blacklaw. His cries were the first indication that anything was amiss.

Upon hearing the injured man's yell, Mr. Blacklaw turned to see his truck moving down hill. He did not realize then that Mr. Hector had been injured and he thought the yell was from someone on the harvester, directing attention to the moving truck, which he boarded and stopped.

It was after he stopped the runaway truck that Mr. Hector was noticed prone. Mr. Blacklaw and men from the combine rushed to him and, seeing that the man was injured, removed him to an automobile and started the 35-mile drive to this city. X-ray photographs revealed a broken leg and crushed chest, with probable internal injuries as factors in his death. Mr. Hector was born February 14, 1963 in Missouri and had lived in the district about 30 years. Besides his son, Ben, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Augusta Schultz. Mr. Hector was a member of the Odd Fellows.
