The Lake Odessa Wave, Friday, September 19, 1919
Daniel Shellenbarger, an old resident of Lake Odessa, passed away last week Wednesday. Mr. Shellenbarger has been connected with this vicinity for 33 years and was known by almost everyone.
He served his country from 1861 to 1864 and served his community and family, and later served his God faithfully. He leaves a large circle of friends besides his family.
Daniel Shellenbarger was born in Knox county, Ohio, October 4, 1838, and died at his home near Lake Odessa, September 10, 1919, where he has lived for 33 years.
In 1861 he enlisted in the war and served three years and 10 days. Later on came to Michigan and in 1880 was married to Sarah Jane Rush. To this union was born three children, Nettie May, who preceded him to the great beyond in December 1906, David Ortho, and Mrs. Lloyd Haney, both living in this place. He also has a son, Albert, by a former wife, living in Grayling, who was present at his death.
He enlisted in the service of the Lord March 9, 1919 and was faithful to the end. The deceased has been in poor health since last February. He bore his affliction bravely and was a patient sufferer to the last, singing most of the time gospel hymns. A few days previous to his death he said he was ready to go.
He leaves to mourn their loss a wife, three children, two sons and one daughter, five grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a host of friends.
