Mark Mitchell Stribling was born in Pendleton District, (now Anderson County) SC, to Thomas Stribling, III and Elizabeth "Betsy" Haile. He was their third son and the third of seven children.

Following the death of his father in 1825, Mark felt that it was his duty to remain at home to protect his younger siblings from their step-mother, Catherine Hamilton.

Mark married Mary Ann Chapman in South Carolina.
After marriage he moved to Pickens Co., AL, in 1829, and then to MS in 1839--to the Rocky Mount Community of the present day Calhoun County, Mississippi. When Mark moved his family to Calhoun County, he paid $40.15 for his 160.4 acres of land.

Mark Mitchell Stribling had five sons to live to adulthood. The three oldest sons married daughters of Ransom and Mary Walker Murphree. All five sons of Mark Stribling served in the Confederate Army; three died while serving.
