The son of Jacob & Mary (Blocher) Saum, in 1860 he was a farm laborer living with and/or working for James Hake in Franklin Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg July 11, 1863, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 16 as a private with Co. D in the six-month organization of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa). He re-enlisted and mustered in Chambersburg January 27, 1864, with the three-year organization, still with Co. D, and honorably discharged with his company July 8, 1865.
He married Anna Margaret George and fathered William O. & Mary Ann (b. 12/15/67), Annie Virginia (b. 08/16/70), Jacob C. (b. @1872), Margaret Rebecca (b. 11/27/73), Charles W. (b. 02/05/76), John Irvin (b. 10/25/79), Nora E. (b. 04/05/81 - married Curtis D. McKee), L. Myrtle (b. 10/26/83 - married an Eckert), Catherine (b. 12/28/85 - married a Summers), and Ethel May (b. 12/04/87); in 1880, he lived in Fayetteville, Franklin County, where he died, says his obituary, from "infirmities of age."
