"Lud" Churchill was born in 1809 in Louisville, Kentucky, to Samuel and Abigail Churchill, whose family at one time owned a large portion of present day Louisville.

He attended University in Lexington in 1830 before settling in Union County, where he married Rebecca Catlett in 1834.

In 1866, he moved to Johnson County, Missouri, along with his wife and three of his children. In Johnson he farmed, initially with his son, Henry, who later opened a drug store.

Armistead Ludwell Churchill died in Knob Noster, Missouri in 1872, and was followed in death by his wife, Rebecca, four years later.
