Allen Rains, one of the oldest settlers of Ringgold County, died at his home in Redding, Thursday, April 18, 1901, aged 91 years. His death resulted from the infirmities of old age. He was born in Virginia on November 11, 1809. His father (John Robert Raines) was a soldier under George Washington and served eight years in the Revolutionary War.
Young Allen received a good common school education in his youth. He removed with his parents to West Virginia where he grew to young manhood, and later moved to Madison County, Indiana, where he was united in marriage to Mrs. Elizabeth Hardman. To them were born six children. His wife died in 1853 and in 1855 he was married a second time to Mrs. F. M. Beaman who survives him. To this union seven children were born of whom four are living.
Mr. Rains and family moved in 1857 to Harrison County, Mo., where they resided for four years. In 1861 they settled in Ringgold County, near old Marshalltown, where the town of Benton is now located. During the Civil War, he enlisted in 1863 in Company G, fourth Iowa infantry and served until the close of the war. At the time he enlisted, he was 56 years of age, yet he participated in all the hardships of soldier life and was glad to be able to serve his country. He was also a veteran of the Mexican war. He incurred disabilities from his last service, from which he never fully recovered, yet he never complained in all his sickness.
Of late years, he resided in Redding and was greatly beloved by all who know him. Mr. Rains had been a member of the Methodist Church from childhood and lived a consistent Christian life. His integrity and Christian character were truly admirable and worthy of emulation.
His death is mourned by a widow, six daughters and three sons and many friends. The funeral was held Saturday in the Methodist church in Redding, conducted by his pastor, Rev. C.E. Wood, and the interment was in the Redding Cemetery.
