Coleman joined the Civil War, along with four of his brothers.
He joined the Confederate Army with the rank of Private in Infantry Battalion, Smith's Legion, Georgia Volunteers on 21 Feb. 1863.
He transferred to Company E, 65th Regiment, Georgia Infantry at Knoxville, Tennessee on 12 Aug. 1863. He was sentenced to be hanged by the Confederate Army,(offense unknown). He ran away and soldiers opened fire, hitting him in the right arm. He lost the arm, but got away.

Joined Co F, 11 Reg't Georgia Infantry as a private on July 3, 1861 in Atlanta, Ga. Info from card shows he is 22 years, 5'10", dark eyes & light hair.
He was sent to the Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, VA on Oct 16, 1861 & admitted on Oct 25, 1861 then returned to duty on Nov 12, 1861.
Dec 1862 he is listed as AWOL. Jan 1863 he is listed as a deserter.
On Feb 12, 1863 transferred to Co E, 65th Reg't, GA Inf. Deserted at Knoxville, TN on Aug 12, 1863.
On Nov 16, 1914 a letter to the Commissioner was sent that no 'desertion ' date was found. Nothing additional found of record relative to the inquiry. Signed by the Adjutant General.
