Roland was born in Buffalo, NY to John C. Standish and Emma Dion. His mother died of a sickness when he was five years old. His father remarried Minnie Genung of Madison, Ohio. His father died only a few years later while in a Buffalo Hospital. His step mother stayed in New York until the death of his Grandma Standish. After her death, Minnie took Roland and his older sister Hazel and younger brother Milton back to her home in Madison, Ohio to live with and be raised by her family the Genung's in about 1898. Here he met and later married Bertha Bates who was his step-mothers niece. (She was the daughter of Minnie's sister Carrie Genung Bates). He graduated from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He married Bertha in 1913 at Bertha's home on Bates road in Madison, Ohio.
Roland took a job as Assistant Advertising Manager in the Hamburger Dept Store (later May Co.) in Los Angeles, CA. In 1920 they moved to Salt Lake City where Roland was Advertising Manager for the Paris Co. Six years later he bought an advertising agency and had his own business for the next 5 years. Following that he was Advertising and Credit Manager for the Axelrad Furniture Co. for 16 years.
They raised their four daughters Betty, Katharine, and twins Genevieve and Jeanette in Salt Lake City. In 1946 Roland retired and he and Bertha moved to Santa Monica, CA. They would eventually move to Phoenix, Arizona where their oldest child Betty (Elizabeth) lived. Roland suffered from Alzheimer's in his old age, but was cared for affectionately by his wife and daughters. Roland and Bertha had 20 grandchildren between 1938 and 1957.
Roland died three weeks after his beloved Bertha on May 22, 1968 and is buried next to her in Phoenix, Arizona.
