SHELDON DUNLAP REMEMBERED
The mettle of a man's life may in part be judged by how a man is remembered when his life ends.
For South Gate chiropractor E. Sheldon Dunlap, remembrance is a recognition of service to the community.
Wednesday night, the South Gate City Council remembered the long time South Gate resident by adjourning its joint City Council-Redevelpment Agency meeting in honor of the man.
Dunlap, who was remembered by Mayor Pro Tem John Sheehy as a man "who liked to mix with peole," died Aug. 5 after being admitted to Downey Community Hospital for treatment of heart disease.
Dunlap is survived by his wife, Louvisa, of South Gate, his daughter, Claudia Wentz, of Long Beach, and a son, retired Air Force Lt. Col Joe Saueressig Dunlap, of Albuquerque, N.M., sevn grand-children and three great grandchildren.
The 84 year-old chiropractor was born Sept. 9, 1900, in Indiana. He moved to South Gate in 1927.
Dunlap was interred in Rose Hill Memorial Park in Whitier last Friday.
In the memorial resolution signed by each of the council members, the city expressed sorrow at the loss of a man "whose strong leadership and helpful manner will always be remembered by all those who worked with him and benefitted by his experience and guidance."
"Doc was a pretty independent guy," Sheehy said. "He was a well-liked guy...well kinown throughout the planning circles throughout California."
He was also well known throughout the city.
A partial list of Dunlap's associations reads like a Who's Who entry.
Dunlap served on the city planning commission for 30 years. In that time he spear-headed the city's commercial rehabilitation program.
He also served on the City Council in 1973-74, completing the unexpired term of Judge Frank Gafkowski.
He was active in East Central and Southern California Planning congresses. In 1966, he served as president of the latter organization.
Dunap was also active in the chamber of commerce, served as the secretary-treasurer of the South Gate Rotary Club, for a time presided over the South Gate Kiwanis Club and was the first president of the Hollydale Business Association.
"Dr. Dunlap, for more than 70 years, honored and served his fellow man both in private and public life," the city resolution read. "And (he) contributed immeasurably to his fellow citizens of the city of South Gate."
"He was a jolly sort of a guy, who liked being around people," Sheehy said. "He was a pretty conservative guy. (But) he was inbued with the philosophy of his profession"
He helped people.
