He was preceded in death by his parents; a stepmother, Mildred Bender; wives, Maxine (Van Sickle) Bender and Janice (St. John) Bender; and a son. Barrett Joe Bender.
Harold was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was in the Seabees in 1945 on Okinawa. Harold was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 841 and of the Jerusalem Lodge 99 Free & Accepted Mason in Clinton and received 50-year pins for both organizations in October 2000. He also was a long time member of Victory Christian Church. While Harold was in Navy boot camp in Great Lakes, Ill., he sang in the Blue Jackets Choir. During the funeral of President Roosevelt the radio flashed on the choir singing the Navy Hymn. Later he played for the Shrine Marching Band and then the Dance Band for almost 10 years.
