Robert "Bob" Vernon Harpst Sept. 7, 1918-Nov. 18, 2011

Robert Vernon Harpst, age 93, died Fri., Nov. 18, at Drews Place of Hillsdale.

He was born Sept. 7, 1918 in St. Clair Shores, Mich. to Roland and Cora (Kleeman) Harpst.

Mr. Harpst grew up in Monroe, Mich.

He was a Monroe High School graduate and a veteran of World War II. He served in the U.S. Army and saw duty in Germany.

Bob lived in Monroe most of his life, except for the last six years. He lived with his son, Jon, and daughter- in- law, Ruby, on Coldwater Lake in Coldwater, Mich. and at their home in Wilson, N.C., and with his daughter, Barbara Griffin, and son-in-law, Al, in Canton, Ga.

Bob is best known for his 30-plus years selling cars in Monroe. After retiring from car sales, he started (with his wife Bettye) Monroe Oxygen, which he ran for 10-plus years before retiring for a second time.

His last employment was with Alpha 6, a dental lab in Monroe, where he served as a delivery person until he retired again at age 84. Bob loved the employees at Alpha 6 as much as he enjoyed the work.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Bettye Jane (Marx) Harpst, and his parents.

They were members of Christ Lutheran Church.

Bob is survived by his son, Robert Jon (Ruby) Harpst of Wilson, N.C. and daughter Barbara Sue (Al) Griffin of Canton, Ga; grandson Robert Jon (Valerie) Harpst Jr. of Wilson, N.C.; granddaughters Kelly Griffin of California and Kristen Griffin of Chicago, Ill.; stepgrandsons Eric (Ann) Loehr and Curtis (Kathie) Loehr, all of Brighton, Mich.; stepgranddaughters Lisa (Kurt) Miller of Coldwater, Mich. and Katie (Rich) Cramer of Grand Blanc, Mich.; stepgreat-grandchildren Mackenzie, Morgan and Kameron Miller of Coldwater, Mich.; Carly Warren, Jake, Tyler and Katelyn Loehr of Brighton, Mich. and Alec, Nicole and Luke Cramer of Grand Blanc, Mich.

For the past two years, Bob especially enjoyed his great-granddaughter, Cadence Marie Harpst of Wilson, N.C. He also knew he had a great-grandson on the way to be born in April 2012.

Bob is also survived by a cousin and dear friend, George Loeffler of Plymouth, Mich.; niece Julie (Marx) Spangler of Findlay, Ohio and longtime friend Lucy Wedell of Monroe.

Interment, with military honor guard, will take place in the summer of 2012, over 4th of July weekend, at Roselawn Memorial Park, La-Salle, Mich.
