John Gehman CASSEL was born in Blair, Waterloo, Ontario, the son of Abraham Biehn CASSEL and Catherine GEHMAN. When he was 14, he moved with his parents to Leighton, Allegan, MI, where he married Lady ROGERS, daughter of John A. ROGERS and Sallie Ann HOOVER. Lady died on 6 Nov 1881, just eleven days after the death of their infant son Ray.

He moved to Caledonia, Kent, MI, where he married Sarah Caroline (Carrie) GAGE, and eventually settled in Harbor Springs Village in Little Traverse Township, Emmet, MI. John and Carrie had two children, Fern Vestella (b. 28 Dec 1884 in Caledonia) and Milo Duane (b. Harbor Springs 9 May 1889, died 20 May 1971 in San Diego, San Diego, CA.) Carrie died on 19 April 1900.

About two years later, John married his third wife, Wilhelmina Laura (Minnie) BUSHLEY and they settled in Pasadena, Los Angeles, CA.

He was a carpenter and liveryman in Michigan, before becoming a fruit farmer for the rest of his life. His third wife, Minnie, would be known by her step- and grandchildren as "Mother CASSEL" until her death just short of her 100th birthday.
