Civil War Union Army Brigadier General. He graduated from Kenyon College in 1859, then studied law in Columbus. Enlisting in the Ohio Reserves after the outbreak of the Civil War, he fought under Generals. John Beatty, W.S. Rosecrans, and Ormsby M. Mitchel. A Colonel at Chickamauga, he was a prominent part of General George H. Thomas' heroic defense. He then took part in the Atlanta Campaign and was present at the surrender of CSA Gen. Joseph E. Johnston in North Carolina. On January 12, 1865, he was appointed Brigadier General, US Volunteers, becoming one of the youngest civilians to attain the rank of full general. On March 13, 1865, he was brevetted Major General. He resigned on July 3, 1865 to practice law in Columbus, where he died in 1894 at the age of 56.
