U.S. Congressman. Moving to Athens County, Ohio in 1832, he engaged in agricultural pursuits and was editor-proprietor of the Athens Messenger, (1844-61). He was a member of the New York State House of Representatives, (1850-72) and served as a Colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War. In 1875, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1879. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his agricultural interests until his death.
