Mary Ann Samantha Stanley Carnes was born March-11-1854 in
Freestone County Texas.
Her parents were Stephen Jefferson Stanley Jr. and Mary Ann Cheairs.
Mary Ann Grand Parents were Stephen J. Stanley SR. and Elizabeth Huff they were from North Carolina they came to Texas in 1834 they came as Colonist with Lorenzo De Zavalla Colony, he recieved His Mexican Land Grant issued June-27-1835 for 4,432 acres of land that is situated in what is now the County of Angelina of the State of Texas.
Mary Ann was raised in Angelina County TX. and on Dec.-12-1873 she married Henry Carnes born Jan.-6-1852 in La. the son of Barnabus Carnes and Louisa Bazoon.
Mary Ann and Henry had 5 children born to there marriage:
1-Mary Ann Carnes born-Nov.-19-1874
2-Henry J. Carnes born Oct.-15-1881
3-Barney C. born-Nov.-22-1884
4-Florance Ella- born-Sept.-22-1886
5-Wesley Herson born-Jan.-8-1888

Mary Ann and Henry had a wonderful Family they were a very close there children were there life as they worked on there farm and rasing there family but when there youngest child Wesley was only a month old traggedy struck there home when Henry died suddenly in 1889 at only 37 years, Grand Dad was cutting down a tree and he became deathly sick and died that evening.
What a shock for Mary Ann and her small children they were heart broke at there loss but they leaned on The Lord and He saw they through this difficult time.
Mary Ann was known as Mank she did all kinds of work to keep her children together. She waited on the sick and delivered Babies and she and her children Farmed.
Mank did all her own plowing and when delivering Babies she was paid with corn by many of the new Fathers for delivering their babies some would bring butchered hogs.
Aunt Mank would go to any one sick she would go on horse back and was known as expert ridder.
When she was younger she and the Moore girls ran a race in old Homer Mank won the new Sidesadle twice, Horse Races
were a common recreation.
Aunt Mank lived in Zavalla, Manning and Huntington where she lived the last part of her life with her daughter Ella Cameron in Huntington and on September-26-1940 she passed away in her sleep.
