Nellie M. Vest married Bert Swearingen on March 2, 1897, in Ottumwa, Iowa. Nellie's parents are named on the marriage record as William Vest and Sarah Knight. Bert's parents are named as George and Sallie (Pownell) Swearingen.

I have transcribed an obituary for Nellie that was published in the Ottumwa Courier on January 4, 1900. The birth date that I have entered on this memorial was figured using the age at death in her obituary. According to this obituary, Nellie died "last evening," which was January 3, 1900. I also found a record of Nellie's death in the record book for the funerals that Jay Funeral Home in Ottumwa handled, and her date of death in their records is also January 3, 1900.

I found this original copy of Nellie's obituary in a scrapbook at The Wapello County Genealogy Society. It is my understanding that the Iowa State Historical Society indexed these news articles and then donated the original papers to our genealogy society, and they cut out obituaries, marriages, etc., and put them in a scrapbook. The newspapers were not micro-filmed, so there is no way to see the actual whole newspaper.

There is a death record at the Wapello County Court House for Nellie, and her date of death on that record is December 3, 1899. I have no idea why this date is given, but I believe it is an error. Nellie's obituary wouldn't have been published in the Ottumwa Courier of January 4, 1900, saying she died "last evening," if she had died a month before that. I have checked this death record at the court house three times now, and I have no explanation for this discrepancy. I talked to the Wapello County Recorder, and we did notice that all of the 1899 deaths were entered into the book sometime in 1900, so perhaps someone just made an error. According to Nellie's death record, she died of typhoid fever.

Obituary From Ottumwa Courier, January 4, 1900:

The death of Nellie M., wife of B. Swearengen [sic], occurred last evening at 5:25 o'clock at her residence, 824 West Mechanic street, aged 16 years, 6 months and 18 days. The deceased leaves a husband and one child, 9 months old. The funeral was held from the residence at 3 o'clock this afternoon, and the services were conducted by Rev. Hiram Baker, of the United Brethren church. Interment was made in the Shaul cemetery.
---------------
In the 1900 Census for Wapello County, Iowa, Bert and his daughter Edith, age one, were living with his parents. Bert was remarried on May 2, 1906, in Ottumwa, to Elsie Marsh. On October 25, 1909, Elsie was remarried to William J. Martin, in Burlington, Iowa, and the marriage record shows that she was widowed.

In the 1910 Census for Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa, William and Elsie are shown with Elsie's two-year-old daughter, Bertha Swearingen. William and Elsie were living in Ottumwa, Iowa, in the 1920 Census, and Bertha was shown as Bertha Martin. It appears that Bertha went by the maiden name of Martin for the rest of her life. She married Roy E. Wilson on May 17, 1931, in Clarion, Iowa, and her parents on the marriage record are shown as William and Elsie (Marsh) Martin. However, the obituary for William Martin names Mrs. Roy E. Wilson as a step-daughter.

I have not been able to find when Bert Swearingen died or where he is buried.
