Wife of Samuel Steffy

A daughter of John and Elizabeth Bowers, the former a native of Germany and the latter of Virginia. Mary & Samuel's known children were:
~ Elizabeth, wife of John Corey, of Punxsutawney;
~ Lena, became the wife of Isaac C. Jordan, both deceased;
~ John died in Kansas;
~ Simon Steffy, a soldier of the Civil war, who was captured & later died in Libby Prison, Richmond, Virginia.

Regarding Mary's family as seen recorded in William James McKnight's "Jefferson County,Pennsylvania-Her Pioneers and People 1800-1915",Volume One-J.H.Beers & Company 1917;Pages 479 & 669; page 479 is partially quoted here;

"About the year 1820 Francis Leech,Reuben Climpson,Daniel Coffman,John Bowers,Philip Bowers and John Vanhorn came to Jefferson county,and settled in what is known as the Bowers Settlement,in Gaskill Township.Those first named young and hardy pioneers were natives of the famous Shenandoah valley of Virginia,whence they emigrated by wagons,arriving in the town of Clearfield after a six weeks' journey. Philip Bowers erected the first cabin,and then sheltered his companions until they had erected a cabin for each family. This first cabin stood near the residence [seen] occupied by Isaac Bowers in 1878,while that of Daniel Coffman occupied the site of his son Samuel's residence...."

“The litigation Bowers v. Woods (1826-020 Augusta, VA, viewable on the Library of Virginia’s Chancery website) provides details of this family and their move to Clearfield County, PA. Per his own statement, John Bowers Sr. was a resident of Adams County, PA as of 1810 (which household is found on the 1800 and 1810 Census of Mt. Joy); there are appropriate age-gender slots for Mary Bowers on both Censuses. (His wife Elizabeth was born in Germany per the 1850 Census; however, John Sr’s place of birth is unclear from the litigation, except that he grew up speaking German.) The entire household moved to Plains Mill, VA in 1811, but John Bowers Sr. purchased land in Clearfield Co., PA (detailed maps provided as exhibits to the pleadings) from William Woods of Plains Mill. Also per the litigation, Mary Bowers married the son of Philip Steffy of Plains Mill. Under cross-examination at his own deposition, Philip Steffy admitted this, the purpose of the question by the attorney for Woods obviously being to imply that Philip was scarcely an impartial witness on behalf of John Bowers. Mary cannot be linked to her siblings’ F-a-G memorials because the graves of John Bowers Sr. and his wife Elizabeth have not been found, but there are memorials to her siblings John Bowers Jr. (62897156), Philip Bowers (112096531), in-law Daniel Coffman husband of Elizabeth Bowers (76509016), Samuel Bowers (30428104) and Andrew Bowers (3184748), all of whom were involved in this relocation.”

Additional Commentary received 23 March 2018...reads as follows...
" The years of Mary's birth and death are problematic, as the headstone is so effaced that any reading from it would be untrustworthy. McKnight wrote that she died in 1823 at the age of 30, and this would seem to have come from descendants as it was not something that he copied from the "Commemorative Biographical Record" of 1898. Death in 1823 would contradict the 1850 Census, which places the birth of her final child SIMON STEFFY c.1827. We cannot at present place the death any more precisely than sometime from 1827 to 1831. The asserted date of birth for Mary of July 1798 (source unknown), if it were valid, would make her 30 years old around the time of Simon's birth, raising a possibility that Mary died from complications of childbirth. At any rate, her husband had remarried no later than 1832."
