John Thomas the oldest son of Reuben Reed abd Julia Ann Stephens, was born in Mercer County, Mo. on February 7, 1856 and pass away at his home in Dayton, Sunday evening, July 22, 1934 at the age of 78 yrs 5 mos and 15 days.
At the age of 11 years he came with his parents to Cass sounty where he spent the remaining years of his life with exception of one year in Cedar county and two years in Bates county. He was a quiet, patient, hoeful suffere, whose illness extended over back over a period of twenty-two years to the cyclone of 1912.
On December 2, 1875 he was united in marriage with Eliza Olive Bush of Dayton. To this union ten children were born,
two having preceded him in death, one dying in infancy and the other, Darrel Leopold was killed in the cyclone of 1912 at the age of 14 years.
Besises his wife, he is survived by four sons: George of Garden City, Mo; Cleve of Kansas City, Mo; Frank of Creighton, Mo., and Irvin of the home; four daughters:
Mrs Julia Lenhart of Garden City, Mo; Mrs Edna McCoy of Raymore Mo; Mrs Irma Sexson of Nevada, Mo., and Mrs Iris Fitzwater of Harrisonville: 24 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one brother J.W. Stephens of Adrian,Mo; two sisters; Mrs Nona Wertz, Powersville, Mo., and Mrs Daisy Smith, Waukesha, WI.! other relatives and friends.
He will be remembered as a quiet neighbor, and a devoted husband and father, he will be sadly missed by his loved ones.The funeral services were conducted in Dayton Community Church. Rev. D.W. Britton officiating. The time of the service was 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, July 24th. The Dayton choir furnished the music with a sols by Miss Emma Chandler. The pallbearers were four grandsons, and two grand-sons-in-laws. The body was taken to the beautiful Dayton cemetery and tenderly laid to rest.A large congregation was present to pay a farewell tribute of respect and affection to this pioneer so well known and so higly esteemed.
