Edward was the only son of Samuel Meakin, b. 24 Aug 1835, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England and Harriet Swain, b. 24 Nov 1827, Long Clawson, Leicestershire, England. Edward had 4 sisters:
Kate, b. abt 1860, married George Ellis
Eliza, b. 26 Aug 1862, married John Orson Herrod
Louisa, b. 12 Mar 1865, married William Gillett
Annie, b. 24 Sep 1871, married Joseph Rudolph Balmforth.

Edward Meakin married Mary Jane Hopewell, 13 Jul 1892, in Logan, Cache, Utah. Edward & Mary Jane had the following children, all born in Salt Lake City, Utah:

Hazel Gertrude, b. 11 Jun 1893, d. 21 Aug 1906, Garfield, Idaho.
Mabel, b. 13 Feb 1895, married Samuel Leslie West.
Lilly Emily, b. 31 Jan 1896, married Frank Aldridge.
Winnifred, b. 6 Sep 1897 married Orene Hansen.
