He served in the Confederate States Army, Co. C of 17th Reg, Confed. Infantry, during the Civil War

Dick left home when he was about twenty years of age, supposedly because he got a girl pregnant and he did not want to marry her. He lived at Billingsly, Augauga County, Alabama for about thirty years before anyone knew what had happened to him.
