ANDREW JOHNSON
Andrew J Johnson, a farmer and minor of Newton County MO, was born in Morgan County, IL on December 5, 1823. He father, John Johnson was a Kentuckian and moved to Indiana before settled in Morgan County IL where he helped raise the first court-house in the county. John married Rachel Buchanan, who was born and raised to adulthood. The couple’s son Andrew J went to Phelps County MO in 1859, but returned in 1861, owing to the worries of war.
In 1871 Andrew returned to MO and settled in the mining town of Granby, Newton County and devoted his time to mining the large lead deposits. On February 28, 1847, Andrew married Miss Mary Gray born in Sangamon County, IL and the mother of eight children: Harriet Ann (wife of George Thomas), Rachel Ellen (wife of E Wyatt), Eliza Jennie (wife of William Sullivan Mesplay), Fannie, John William, George A, Daniel (Dan) Franklin and Joseph Michael.
